A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machinery that is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some items, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These machinery are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Most often they are utilized for moving pallets and finishing specific jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of an order picker utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting that normally sits quite close to the ground. The operator can direct the equipment to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks could be lifted up to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials required, are located on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then entire platform can be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, some businesses may have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be utilized to finish these specific tasks at some companies instead.
